Raffia palms (Raphia) are a genus of about twenty species of palms native to tropical regions of Africa, and especially Madagascar, with one species also occurring in Central and South America.
Raffia fiber is derived from the thin, delicate membrane found on the underside of leaf fronds. This membrane is carefully removed to obtain long and slender fibers. To enhance their durability, these fibers can be rolled together and eventually dried. The versatility of the fiber is evident in their numerous applications.
